It may seem like they’re late for the party, but Honda is finally moving to battery-powered electric vehicles, starting with an upcoming SUV called the Prologue. Of course, there have been other attempts at partial electrification with Insight Hybrid and Hydrogen Fuel Cell-powered Clarity, but none have been successful – and not available in all-electric Honda e states.

So, what do we know about Prologue so far? The Japanese firm has already dropped a preview sketch depicting a GM Ultima-based crossover. As for everything else? Well, let’s explore more.
A fresh outlook
When it comes to Honda preview illustrations, the prologue looks like a handsome bit kit – but with conceptual drawings and their flashy proportions it’s always the way to go. The production-purpose version will probably lose the hot-rod daylight opening area (DLO) for a practical, family-friendly aesthetic.
Other than that, the styling of the teaser sketches will be largely intact. The front has a glossy black panel with a pair of slim matrix LED headlamps, and a trapezoidal lower grille (to cool the battery) adds a degree of visual aggression.
Outside of the chiseled hood and rake windshield, a strong shoulder line freshly enhances the chaotic aesthetics. At the rear, the tailgate is framed by a pair of LED taillamps that cascade nicely downward before spreading horizontally.
While Honda has yet to provide any interior details, it will reveal the automaker’s unique strengths in terms of construction quality and cabin flexibility (hopefully, Honda’s clever magic seats will make an appearance). Expect the impressive level of space occupied by GM as a byproduct of Ultium electrical architecture and battery technology.
The prologue will play the latest in driver convenience and infotainment technology, although most of it will be re-branded GM content with some of Honda’s own features added. Other goodies will include a full digital instrument cluster, connected services, over-the-air updates, wireless charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Under the skin
The crossover is underpinned by General Motors’ scalable ultium battery-electric architecture as part of a strategic alliance between the two automakers. Different versions of the platform are already in operation under the lyrics of Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac. While Honda did not go into details, the Prologue is thought to be a medium-sized crossover similar to the 2023 Cadillac Lyric with which it could share its BEV3 platform, although this has not been specifically confirmed.
Using the lyric as an example, we can expect that the prologue will have a lithium-ion cell 100-kilowatt battery with a driving range of more than 300 miles (483 km). Traction should potentially come in two flavors, a base single motor rear-wheel-drive model and a more powerful dual-motor setup for the all-wheel drive version, but will not share the same levels of performance with high-end lyrics. Which is available in 340 hp and 490 hp variants.
DC up to 190 kW will enable fast-charging drivers to add an average range of 76 miles for every 10 minutes of charging time.
Rivalry and disclosure
The Prologue will directly or indirectly compete (increasingly depending on price and size) against a growing number of electric SUVs, with future mid-size offerings ranging from the Hyundai Ioniq 7 and Kia EV9 to the current crop of crossovers like the Nissan Aria, Hyundai. Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Genesis GV60.

Most likely we will see a concept model, or what Honda prefers to call a prototype, in the coming year, the final production model will be followed soon after it starts selling in early 2024. Honda expects to sell about 60,000 units. In the first year and 2025 this number will be raised to at least 70,000. The proposal will be built at a GM plant in Michigan and will probably later create a more luxurious Acura version called ADX.
