Hyundai has launched a robotics service in Seoul with the Level-4 Ioniq 5

The mayor of Seoul, South Korea, today became the first passenger to use Hyundai’s new autonomous ride-hailing service. The pilot project is called RoboRide and will see two Ioniq 5s equipped with advanced technology around the busy Gangnam district of the city.

“At Hyundai Motor Group, we are developing Level 4 autonomous driving technology based on the Internally Advanced Driving Support System (ADAS), the effectiveness and safety of which is verified through mass production and successful commercial launches,” said Wongjun Zhang, Head of Wongjun Zhang. The electric vehicles will be equipped with Hyundai’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology and will be operated in collaboration with Gene Mobility, a startup that operates the artificial intelligence-powered car-healing platform iM.

In addition, Hyundai and Jean Mobility have become the first companies to operate an autonomous ride-hailing service in Gangnam District, one of the busiest and most densely populated areas in Korea. Permission comes from the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which has granted them a temporary autonomous driving operation permit.

“We are strengthening our capabilities by working on research and development with relevant organizations. “We look forward to taking the lead in the future dynamics scenario,” said Lee Seong-wook, CEO of Gene Mobility.

In fact, Hyundai has worked with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to establish a system that can connect traffic signals to autonomous vehicles. It has also been collecting autonomous test data in the area since 2019.

Since this is a pilot project, the service will be limited so as not to disturb autonomous vehicles with too much traffic at first. As a result, ride-haulers will only be able to book autonomous vehicles between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hyundai says there is some confusion, however, as it looks forward to expanding the pilot project and offering the service to a wider public in the future.
