LAFD takes delivery of the first electric fire truck in North America

The Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) has taken delivery of an electric fire engine, the first in North America.

The truck was made by the Austrian company Rosenbauer and was called RTX. The brand claims that the car is the world’s first electric fire truck.

City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Christine Crowley unveiled the car outside the LAFD Historical Museum in Hollywood and spoke of its potential: I will. “

The RTX is powered by two electric motors, each with a four-wheel drive on the axle, and features a crab mode for navigation. The motor itself can deliver 360 kW peak / 250 kW continuous, equivalent to 490 HP / 350 HP. The two batteries supplied by Volvo are onboard for a total of 132 kilowatt hours, providing up to two hours of operation.

In addition to the electric drivetrain, the truck has a diesel range extender, a BMW 3.0-liter six-cylinder unit capable of 300 horsepower. The brakes are 17 ”in diameter and have a regenerative feature for recharging batteries.

Except for the electric powertrain, the car is a pretty standard fire truck with two 1,000-foot hoses, one 5 “in diameter and the other 2.5”. The water tank can hold 500 to 750 gallons, which can be delivered at the rate of 750 or 1,500 gallons per minute depending on the desired pump output.

The LAFD originally ordered the Rosenbauer RTX in February 2020 and expected delivery in 2021, but the epidemic stood in the way. Electric fire trucks start at $ 900,000, but city-ordered kit-out models increase that number to $ 1.2 million.

According to the Daily Bulletin, Rancho Kukamanga will be the second city to receive an electric fire truck from Rosenbauer.
