The idea of adding more wheels to a car is so simple it seems silly. But in the 70’s, very serious engineers like the Tyrrell F1 team gave serious thought to making it work.
The team from the Driven Media YouTube channel has released the latest in its series of over-the-top tire tests to determine if just adding four wheels to a Caterham Seven will speed it up. Eaterham dubbed, it has dual features at its four corners.
To make it, the team simply bought some steel, welded them together, and installed them to increase the amount of rubber on the road. They claim that they have 350 section width tires thanks to this change, which is comparable to a set of appropriately sized Michelin Pilot Sport tires, which will have a 250 section width.

Although the wheels are undoubtedly wide, they are also quite heavy. Despite the fact that they do not actually weigh the wheels, the group indicates that the added mass is sufficient.
So can a significant increase in rubber on the road prevent a significant increase in unchanged weight? Well, track, the answer is yes. With the typical Avon tire set in the car, it completes a lap of their test track in 31.6 seconds. With the new double-width wheels, though, they managed to set a lap time of 31.1 seconds, cutting their time by half a second, which is a pretty impressive feat on a short track.
Off the track, though, the car is like a nightmare. Although a Caterham is by no means a big car, Etherham fights to turn as fast as once. Even with its extraordinary width there are difficult times to fit in parking spots.
Unlike the F1 tires previously tested by this crew, however, the dualis can actually be used on the road and does not require a tire blanket to be fit on the track. They cost significantly less, so which one should you take?
