Honda has announced the withdrawal of hundreds of 2020 CR-V models in the United States due to fuel pump problems.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice stating that insulators were inadequately welded during the production of a clip for the absorbers used inside the fuel tank. For example, the absorbent clip can separate and block the path of the fuel pump float arm.
Honda says an obstructive fuel pump float arm will not properly display the fuel level in the fuel gauge, which can lead to an unexpected engine stall from fuel starvation. It can also prevent the engine from starting, increasing the risk of accidents without prior warning.

Supplier records reveal that insufficient welding occurred during one shift of fuel tank production where the weld depth control stopper was not set to specification. Honda first received a warranty claim regarding the problem in July 2021 and began analyzing the fuel tank supplier as well as the failed part. Honda has received six additional warranty claims regarding no-start condition, fuel gauge contamination, or engine failure.
A total of 212 Honda CR-V models were involved in the recall. These cars were made between September 24, 2020 and September 29, 2020.
Owners of damaged vehicles will be contacted by mail and instructed to take their CR-V to an authorized Honda dealer who will replace the free fuel tank. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed will be eligible for a refund. Vendors will be notified of the withdrawal on May 27 when owners will be notified on or after July 5.
