Software bugs can cause Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 to roll on the parkway

Hyundai will withdraw 10,729 Ioniq 5s and Kia will also withdraw 9,014 more EV6s.

Hyundai is not aware of any such incidents in the United States, but has launched an investigation into four incidents that occurred on the Ioniq 5s and a Kia EV6 in South Korea.

In this case, the owners claim that after parking the cars on a bend and turning off the ignition, the cars inadvertently move away. After investigating these claims, Hyundai determined that voltage fluctuations could affect the command signal of the Shift control unit, which manages the shift-by-wire system.

If this happens, it could be a momentary disruption of the parking sail, a pin in a vehicle’s transmission or drive system that acts to physically prevent the vehicle from moving while in the park.

Hyundai’s investigation also determined that the problem affected the Genesis GV60 and GV80 EV. Fortunately, these vehicles have not yet reached US customers and will therefore be fixed before delivery.

For owners of the Ioniq 5 and EV6, meanwhile, Hyundai will communicate via first-class mail from July 10. Shifter control units will be asked to return their vehicles to their local dealer for free software updates. This fix will prevent the parking pole from moving from the parking position by closing the car.

Until then, Hyundai recommends that owners of these vehicles park their vehicles on a flat surface and avoid parking on a bend until they are withdrawn.
