SSC North America is determined to show Tuatara’s highly advertised 300 mph (483 km / h) potential, close to its goal with a new record run. The US-built supercar has been able to reach 295 miles per hour (474.8 km / h), a 2.3-mile stretch at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, and it looks like it will go faster if there is more space to do it.
To avoid any reasonable suspicion, Wrestling Dual VBOX recorded speeds using the GNSS system and an additional Life Racing GPS unit. The record was set on May 14, 2022. SSC Tuatara was driven by its owner, Larry Kaplin, who broke his previous record.

For those who aren’t following the story, the supercar has made several attempts to break the 300-hour-per-hour barrier. It all started in October 2020 and the initially claimed speed of 316.11 miles per hour (508.73 km / h) was proved wrong. Another race was held in December 2020, due to heat-related problems with the engine, and the Toyota was able to reach only 251.2 miles per hour (404 km / h). In January 2021, at an average speed of 282.9 mph (455.3 km / h), it was named the world’s fastest production vehicle, however, the SSC was still not satisfied. An additional record will be run in May 2021, but the truck carrying the Toyota crashed and damaged the supercar. And that leads us to the May 2022 record which is probably not the end.
SSC Tuatara is based on a carbon-fiber monocoque and has a drag coefficient of 0.279 cd. The supercar is powered by a twin-turbo 5.9-liter V8 engine that produces up to 1,750 hp (1,300 kW / 1,768 PS) of methanol. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a CIMA seven-speed automatic gearbox.
Jarrod Shelby, founder and CEO of SSC North America, said: “The acceleration that Tuatara was building at 295 miles per hour really told us that this car was not even close to reaching its ceiling. All the data and images give us a clear picture that the reason for the limitation is not the car, but the fact that we went off the runway. “
Mitchell Townsend, an independent analyst and wrestling technician who attended all of Twitter’s speed testing sessions, said: “I have never seen such a pull on a road car. I believe this is the only car I know right now that the 300 can be verified to run, especially at such short distances. ” Achieved speed of 437 km / h).
Another competitor for the speed record is Koenigsegg, who recently built the first Jesko Absolut development car, capable of a theoretical maximum speed of 330 mph (531 km / h). As a reminder, the Bugatti dropped the record speed of business after the 304.77 mph (490.48 km / h) one-way race of the Chiron Super Sport 300 + on the Ehra-Lesson track in September 2019.
