Ford has confirmed today that it will build the next-generation Mustang at the Michigan Flat Rock Assembly plant. As part of the announcement, the automaker released an image suggesting that the new Pony car would be sold with a manual transmission.
Although not a car rendering, the image features Mustang’s Pony logo with the word 7th Generation on top. The O of the word “Generation” shows the gear pattern of a six-speed manual transmission.
While this fall is less of a formal confirmation, it is a meaningful and intentional gesture for Mustang fans that strongly refers to the availability of the transmission.

Despite enthusiastic concerns about the future of the transmission, it seems to have found its place in the current automotive landscape. Automakers like Nissan are offering three-pedal gearboxes in their new Z, Toyota has added it to the supra, and others have made it a point to offer it in a vehicle designed for enthusiasts, for Ford to offer it would be nothing more than an amazing decision. Even so, owning one is still beyond the reach of the average person.
On an engineer’s LinkedIn page, it was suggested that the car would get a hybrid version of the 5.0-liter V8 and 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. In 2018, meanwhile, Ford said that “the Mustang Hybrid will deliver the same performance as the V8 with more low-end torque.”
It remains to be seen whether Ford decides to offer a manual with specific models or plans to sell a hybrid with a transmission. Unfortunately, we may have to wait a while before we find out because Ford is not expected to unveil the 2024 Mustang by the spring of 2023.
