Dutch startup Lightair hopes to push the electric car market into the future with its new car, Lightair 0. The EV will not only feature wheel motors and aerodynamic design, but will also be covered with solar panels to help it go farther. As much as possible.
Away from some pie-in-the-sky ideas, Lightair promises that production of the 0 will begin this fall. It adds that the first delivery could start in early November.
“Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for since the five of us co-founders sat in a kitchen and sketched out our dream of building the most sustainable car on the planet,” said Lex Hofslut, co-founder and CEO of LightYear. “In 2016, we only had one idea; Three years later, we had a prototype. Now, after six years of testing, repetition, (re) design and countless obstacles, Light Year 0 proves that the impossible is indeed possible. “

To begin with, Lightyear has tried to build an EV as much as possible. The shape of the car gives it a drag coefficient of 0.19, which compares favorably with the Mercedes EQXX concept and should make it the most aerodynamic family car sold when it is sold.
As well as being slippery, it is also quite light. Weighing just 3,472 pounds (1,575 kg), it is slightly heavier than the Toyota Supra. Despite measuring more than 16.4 feet (5,000 mm) in length, it is slightly shorter than a BMW 7-Series.
This size allows it to have 54 square feet (5 square meters) of patented double-curved solar arrays, allowing the light year 0 to charge under the sun at any time. The automaker claims that the car has up to 6,835 miles (11,000 km) of solar power per year. At best, it can recover a range of 43 miles (70 km) per day from the sun.
This, calculating the light year, means that people use their cars for the average commute per day (which is estimated to be 22 miles). [35 km] Long) In sunny countries the charge can go up to seven months. While this is an excellent situation, it is believed that even Dutch customers can go two months at a time if they park their Lightyear 0 outside.
Ignoring solar charging, the automaker estimates that the car will have a WLTP range of 388 miles (625 km) per charge. At 68 miles (110 km / h) on highway speeds, meanwhile, it is estimated that the car could travel 348 miles (560 km) before running out of juice. This is thanks to the highly efficient motors placed between the aerodynamics and the wheels. The automaker claims that its drivetrain is now the most efficient in an EV, using only 10.5 kilowatt-hours of power per 62 miles (100 kilometers) at highway speeds.
And it doesn’t even prototype some Spartan inside. Light Year promises that the 0 will have a 10.1-inch touchscreen that can be updated in the air. Meanwhile, the ingredients will be completely vegetarian and it uses naturally made textiles like microfiber suede and rattan palm details.
That all comes at a price. The automaker said today that Lightyear 0 will start at € 250,000 (current exchange rate is $ 263,243 USD). It will produce only 946 of them per year. It plans to create a related model, though, with a starting price of € 30,000 (US 31,589 USD). Production of this car will start towards the end of 2024 / early 2025.
