Peugeot recently teased the new 408 crossover fastback for Europe but there is another new 408 in China, a sedan that is completely unrelated to the aforementioned model. The compact sedan has been advertised as a new generation but a closer look reveals that it is actually a massive facelift of the old 408, with updated styling making it look like a four-door variant of the 308.
The 408 sedan was originally launched in 2014 and received a subtle facelift in 2018, making it the second update in the model’s life cycle. Dimensions unchanged at 4,750 mm (187 inches) in length and 2,730 mm (107.5 inches) with a wheelbase. This proves that it is still based on the same EMP2 architecture that was also used by the previous-Gen 308.

Presumably, the new 408 sedan shares several parts with its predecessor, including the profile and greenhouse. However, the front end has been redesigned with aggressive headlights and vertical DRL fangs featured on the front bumper like the new 308 and Facelifted 3008. Similarly, the grille has grown with a modern pattern and Peugeot’s new symbol, while the wrong bumper intake on the bumper gives a sportier look.
The changes behind are equally impressive. The three-box sedan adopts thin LED taillights that are connected by a black strip, like the big 508. The tailgate has more prominent integrated spoilers and the bumper is more sculptural than ever. Last but not least, a new range of colors refreshes the exterior, although the five-spoke alloy wheels look identical to the outgoing model.
Inside the cabin, the 408 acquires a new version Peugeot iCockpit that looks quite modern, though not as fancy as the European 308. The redesigned dashboard features a high-mounted 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch infotainment touchscreen. Below are the aircraft-style shortcut buttons. Peugeot also has a signature small-diameter steering wheel and new aluminum-style trim.
Beneath the bonnet is a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 167 hp (125 kW / 170 PS) and 250 Nm (184.4 lb-ft) of torque. Power is transmitted to the front axle via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Don’t expect an electric alternative to Peugeot’s European range PHEV powertrain because this platform is not compatible with them.
The new 408 is already available for pre-order on Peugeot-Dongfeng’s official website. Pricing is expected to be the same as its predecessor, which is still offered for sale starting at 119,700 (17,903). Peugeot 408 competitors in the Chinese market include the recently launched Ford Focus sedan, Honda Civic / Integra, VW Lavida / Lamando and Toyota Corolla / Levin.
