Shortly after BMW introduced the latest generation X1 to the North American market, the new SUV was unveiled in European camouflage where it will be offered as an EV, known as the iX1.
Offered exclusively in the xDrive30 camouflage, the 2023 BMW iX1 is BMW’s first all-wheel drive EV to compete in the premium compact segment. It runs on a pair of electric motors that combine to deliver 313 hp and 364 lb-ft (494 Nm) of torque. These figures allow the SUV to hit a maximum speed of 62 mph (100 km / h) and 112 mph (180 km / h) in 5.7 seconds.

These motors are supplied with their juices in a 64.7 kWh battery pack located flat on the floor of the SUV. The battery supports DC fast-charging up to 130 kW, which means it can be charged 10 to 80 percent in 29 minutes or add 120 km (75 miles) range in 10 minutes. It offers single- and three-phase AC charging at rates up to 11 kW which can be increased up to 22 kW.
BMW says the combined power consumption of the iX1 xDrive30 is 17.3 – 18.4 kWh per 100 km, ranging from 413 km (256 miles) to 438 km (272 miles).
Buyers of iX1 gain access to the IONITY charging network across Europe and their monthly subscription fees will be waived for the first 12 months. Buyers will also be happy to know that the Automaker states that the global warming potential of the iX1 is about 30 percent lower than that of the new X1 sDrive19i and that if renewable energy is used for charging, the global warming potential of its life cycle is about 60 percent lower. .
Several visual changes distinguish the iX1 from the combustion-driven version of the third-generation X1. For example, at the front end is a shroud of bright blue air. BMW has decorated it with a blue accent around the kidney grille, a blue accent on the side skirt and blue trimming on the rear bumper.
It’s not just the electric iX1 that sets the new SUV apart from the sets offered in North America. Where only a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder will be offered on the stateside, there will be many more engines for European buyers to choose from.
The X1 sDrive18i found at the beginning of the range is a turbo 1.5-liter three-cylinder with 136 hp and 170 lb-ft (230 Nm) of torque. Sitting on top is the xDrive23i complete with a 2.0-liter Turbo Four with 48-volt light-hybrid technology and rated at 204 hp and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm). Two diesel are also offered, namely the xDrive18 a 2.0-liter turbo diesel that produces 150 hp and 265 lb-ft (360 Nm) and the xDrive23d, fitted with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that combines light and hybrid technology at 197 hp. And 295 lb-ft (400 Nm).
Two petrol hybrids will also be offered from November 2022. The first is the xDrive25e a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid system, rated at 245 hp and 352 lb-ft (477 Nm) combined. The xDrive30e offers more performance with the same basic plug-in hybrid powertrain but has been operated up to 326 hp and 352 lb-ft (477 Nm).
The new 2023 BMW X1 will be available across Europe from October. Price details have not been announced yet.
