The Honda pilot was investigated by the NHTSA when the owners complained of being stuck

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the 2016-2020 Honda Pilot for an issue related to auto stop / start function.

The U.S. security regulator reports that it has received 221 complaints from customers alleging that their vehicles were stuck at their stop signs and lights. They say the problem occurs when the car stops at a junction and the stop / start function shuts off the engine. Once the engine has stopped, some owners report that the car does not restart automatically to continue their journey.

While this in itself is a cause for concern, some owners further complained that their Honda pilot was completely dead and that they needed to jump on it to get it back on track. It’s something that wouldn’t be pleasant to try in the middle of a busy street.

This problem seems to particularly affect Honda pilots with touring and elite trims fitted with 3.5-liter V6 engines and nine-speed automatic transmissions. The NHTSA estimates that the total population may be 194,731 vehicles that may be affected by this error.

In its interaction with Honda, however, NHTSA has learned that the problem is not limited to pilots. Other models fitted with engines and transmissions, such as the Honda Odyssey, Acura TLX, and Acura MDX, may experience similar failures.

Documents have not yet revealed the cause of the failure, but the NHTSA said it is launching a preliminary investigation to determine the scope and severity of the problem, as well as potential security concerns. The regulator may force Honda to initiate the withdrawal depending on the outcome of its investigation.
