The 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is one of the most exciting and expensive vehicles ever made by Porsche, and it is turning 50 years old.
The word Carrera means “race” in Spanish, while the RS on the back of the car was “Rennsport”, meaning “race sport” in German, so Porsche literally named this 911 “Race Race Sport 2.7.”
To keep the 2.7 RS always pointing in the right direction, traction needs to be improved from the tail-happy (and straight pendulum-preming) slender body of previous models. To do this, the rear was widened and a larger 7-inch wide wheel was fitted to the rear. The upper cherry is the so-called “doctel” spoiler, which improves aerodynamics and pushes the rear of the car towards the tarmac.
The interior of the sports car was stripped as much as possible, losing beautiful items such as rear seats, carpets, watches, coat hooks and armrests. Seats were also replaced with lightweight units, even the hood crest was a sticker instead of a painted enamel badge.

With thin gauge sheet metal body panels, windows and plastic, the car weighs 960 kg (2116 lb), a full 115 kg (253 lb) less than a standard 911. The car’s Crux is a 210 hp 2.7-liter flat-six engine that features fuel injection and a magnesium block to reduce weight. This combination of lightweight and powerful meant that the RS was the fastest German production car of its day with a speed of 0-100 km / h (0-62 mph) in sport disguise of just 5.8 seconds and a top speed of over 245 kmph. / Hour (152 miles per hour).
The speed was not only fun on the road, as the special 911 was designed and equivalent to a racing car that could also be driven in the office. Porsche has RS raced in both Group 3 and Group 4 classes, where it has won a huge number of victories around the world.
A special exhibition dedicated to the 50 years of the Carrera 2.7 RS will be housed in the Stuttgart brand museum and will run from September 20, 2022.
